espgame.sh
espgame.sh is a bash script you can use to experiment with your ESP powers in a playful way. It might just as well be used as a guessing-game. The idea to espgame.sh sprang from the tests with the so-called Zener cards known from psychic research (symbols: circle, waves, cross, square, and star) which are taken to conduct experiments for extra-sensory perception.
I've also made some sets of images containing different symbols. And I've tied them all up in a parcel for you, so that you can start playing right away. You'll find them in the download section.
Playing
Just start the script in an X-shell. The rules are very simple. User input and explanations what to do take place interactively. Essentially there are two alternating steps:
- To display the image just press the key s (= show image).
- By pressing r (= right) or w (= wrong) after closing the image again, you tell the script wether your guess was right or wrong.
There is a choice of several variations you can play with:
- You can guess images which have been previously chosen in the background, or make predictions which image might be chosen next.
- All the images in a directory can be displayed an arbitrary number of times until the game is quit manually. Alternatively (as practised in ESP research) the game may go through the number of images in the directory multiplied by itself (e.g. 5 x 5 = 25); after that the game ends automatically.
- If you wish, an overview image containing all the images available in the game can be generated.
On the basis of the user input during the game, in the end the script calculates a simple analysis expressed in percentages.
Playing ideas
- I often prefer to play with only a few images (mostly 5 to 7). For this purpose I've created directories with the number of cards as the directory name (e.g. "five"), and in there I've just put symbolic links to my presently favourite images.
- It's also fun to do experiments together with somebody else, e.g. by one of you being the sender (= the person who sees the image) and the other one being the receiver (= the person who guesses and gives their best to become a receiving station).
